Don't Post Ads on County Signs
Ads create safety issue for motorists

(Port Orchard) Long days and great weather makes summer the season of garage sales, weddings, lost pets, picnics and family reunions. Advertising your summer event is important, but the County’s Department of Public Works is advising you not to use sign posts to do it. “It’s unlawful to post ads on sign posts”, according to Traffic Engineer Jeff Shea, “Ads can create safety issues for motorists and we remove them as soon as we can,” he added.

Ads posted on signs are distracting. They divert the driver’s attention, and in some cases, are placed over the sign itself. Signs at intersections, particularly stop signs, are used most frequently for ads. “That’s logical from a marketing perspective,” said Shea, “but they distract the driver at the point where the driver needs to be most attentive.”

Litter is another problem created by ads on sign posts. Some advertisers are diligent and remove their signs after their event, but most do not. In those cases signs deteriorate, fall from the post, and become roadside litter.

Help us to keep signs clear of distraction, and help reduce litter. Refrain from using sign posts for flyers and announcements.
