County Tests Yellow Left Turn Display

(Port Orchard) — Have you ever sat in a left turn pocket waiting for the green arrow while traffic on both sides of you has green lights with no oncoming traffic to prevent you from turning if you had the green arrow? Kitsap County is testing a new yellow left turn display for this reason, and will begin installations in specific locations.

A new signal indication, the flashing yellow arrow, has been operating successfully around the country and has been well received by motorists. The flashing yellow arrow indicates that after yielding to oncoming traffic you may proceed with the left turn movement. The signal reduces driver frustration and accidents, and improves the operation of the intersection. At busy intersections where many drivers turn left the capacity of the intersection increases greatly.

The first intersection to get the flashing yellow arrow will be the intersection in front of Wal-Mart on Bethel Road in South Kitsap. The signal is scheduled for installation in February 2008. Barring any significant problems or motorist’s complaints, the program will expand to include county-maintained signals along Mile Hill Drive. Other signals will be converted as this new technology proves safe and workable, and funding becomes available.
