County To Blast at Quarry Site

(Port Orchard, WA) – A contractor for Kitsap County Public Works is blasting at the County’s quarry near Wildcat Lake Friday (6/15) or Monday (6/18). McCallum Rock Drilling, Inc. of Chehalis, WA is doing the work under a $146,000 contract with the County.

“The blasting produces about 40,000 cubic yards of materials,” according to John James, County Surveyor. “The material is used to build, maintain and repair County roads,” said James. The area is remote and no homes or commercial buildings are located within a half-mile of the blast location.

Blasting occurs between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Ten minutes prior to, and immediately after each blast, all access to the area is restricted to prevent unauthorized entry. An air horn, audible to at least one half mile from the blast, is used as a warning. The three-minute warning consists of three short blasts of five seconds duration with five seconds between each blast. The all clear signal is one long blast (20 seconds) from the air horn. The work will be completed in one day, either Friday or Monday.
