Kitsap County Adopt-A-Road Program Begins

Port Orchard, WA—Kitsap County Public Works encourages community volunteers to adopt County roads for litter clean up through the new Adopt-A-Road program.

“We’re encouraging individuals, businesses, and groups such as homeowner associations to sign up to collect litter from a road in their community,” says Kevin Bevelhimer, the County’s Adopt-A-Road Coordinator.

Participants receive safety training and equipment to keep them safe on the roads. “Those who sign up should make safety a priority when they request the road they want to adopt,” says Bevelhimer, adding that a straight and level road is safer than one with blind curves and hills. Other considerations include the speed and frequency of the traffic and a shoulder wide enough for safety.

In addition to safety equipment, litter clean up volunteers are issued special bags that entitle them to free disposal at designated drop-off sites for the litter they pick up.

Applications may be obtained by calling The Open Line at 360-337-5777, by email to openline@co.kitsap.wa.us, or fill out the on-line application.  Mail completed forms to the Adopt-A-Road Coordinator at the address on the application. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, however minors ages 15-17 can apply with an adult.
