Kitsap Activities Celebrate America Recycles Day

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Reporters are invited to a reception 11/14 at Givens Community Center beginning at approximately 10:30 am to meet the students and see their winning posters.

PORT ORCHARD, WA — On Monday, November 14, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners will proclaim November 15 as America Recycles Day at their regular televised meeting. Additionally, twenty local students grades K-8 will be honored by the Board for their winning artwork that will be included in a unique, full color America Recycles Day 2006 calendar.

“Recycling makes a big difference in our environment, in the wise use of our natural resources, and in the economic well-being of our nation,” Gretchen Olsen, the Solid Waste Division Manager said. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in whatever way they can. It can be as simple as remembering to drop your soft drink container in a recycle bin, or asking for recycled-content products when you shop. Every small effort combines with others to make a big difference.”

Students K-8 were invited to participate in the 5th annual Kitsap County America Recycles Day poster contest. The winning posters, representing each grade level, will be on display November 7-14 in the Public Works building across the street from the County Courthouse in Port Orchard. A reception honoring the students will take place at the Givens Community Center immediately after the proclamation and award ceremony at the Commissioner’s meeting.

Other America Recycles Day events in Kitsap County include displays of recycled-content products at branches of Kitsap Regional Library and classroom presentations in public and private schools across the county.

America Recycles Day is a national event to promote recycling and choosing recycled-content product when shopping. Says Olsen, “We encourage every citizen to take a few minutes to commit to recycling and buying recycled products whenever they can as Kitsap County joins the rest of the nation in this annual campaign.”

One of the most popular features of the national campaign is the drawing for a new Ford Escape Hybrid SUV for those 18 and over and TREK bikes made of recycled aluminum for children. To enter, people are asked to sign a personal pledge to recycle, which can be made online at www.americarecyclesday.org. All pledges will be entered into a random drawing.

America Recycles 2005 maintains a website at www.americarecyclesday.org where you can get additional information or you can visit www.kitsapgov.com/sw for information about activities and programs within Kitsap County.
