Family caregivers offered free seminars
Legal issues, respite care discussed

(Silverdale, WA) – November is Family Caregiver Month and in honor of this, Kitsap County’s Aging and Long-Term Care Family Caregiver Support Program is hosting free seminars for unpaid family and volunteer caregivers from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10 at the Best Western Silverdale Beach Hotel, 3073 NW Bucklin Hill Road.

“Without family caregivers, many in our community wouldn’t be able to afford to ‘age in place’ or successfully play the cards that life might deal us,” said Kitsap County Commissioner Rob Gelder. “I’ve witnessed the vital, yet challenging role of the caregiver in my own family. I would encourage everyone to take the time to learn from the programs offered, but most importantly to take care of themselves in the process.”

The 2015 Family Caregiver seminars support the theme of this year’s Family Caregiver Month, “Respite: Caring for Caregivers.” Seminars will include:

- Legal Issues Related to Caregiving, presented by attorney Sara Humphries;
- Self-Care for Caregivers, presented by Robin O’Grady; and
- Medication Management, with pharmacist Dan Smart.

When trying to juggle multiple roles, caregivers may put aside tending to their own well-being and health needs, resulting in increased stress, health problems, depression, and feelings of anger and anxiety about their situation. Attending this year’s free Family Caregiver seminars offers unpaid caregivers the opportunity to increase their resilience in these areas, network with other caregivers, and gain relevant information and knowledge of local resources from industry professionals in the community.

The state of Washington estimates that more than 800,000 people provide care for another adult. A caregiver’s role may have developed slowly or suddenly and can be physically and emotionally demanding.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m. for the seminars and complimentary refreshments will be served. Professional caregivers may also attend for a $15 fee. Registration is required for all who wish to attend. Call (360) 337-5700 or (800) 562-6418. Individuals who may require special accommodations should contact Vicki Hanson at (360) 337-5700, (800) 562-6418 or TDD (360) 307-4280. One week advance notice is needed for interpreter services.

Additionally, the center provides a library of materials and free personalized consultation with a professional and caring case manager for practical information and ongoing support.
