Kitsap County celebrates Farmers Market Week Aug. 2-8
(Port Orchard, WA) - The 2015 farmers market season is well underway in Kitsap County. In recognition of National Farmers Market Week Aug. 2-8, the Board of County Commissioners encourages residents to visit Kitsap markets to purchase and consume the bounty of fresh, locally grown foods available this time of the year. Markets are located in Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Kingston, Port Orchard, Poulsbo, Silverdale and Suquamish.
The farmers markets positively influence community health and regional economies, while also revitalizing rural communities and increasing access to nutritious foods. A long-time supporter of farmers markets, Commissioner Charlotte Garrido is a co-founder of one in Port Orchard. She champions local farmers and works closely with the Kitsap County Food Policy Council, a collective of organizations that advises Commissioners on food system policies to foster a thriving and sustainable local food system in Kitsap County.
“Kitsap County farms are an important part of the quality of life on our peninsula,” Commissioner Garrido noted. “Farmers markets serve as retail sites for local farmers and food processors, and they are community gathering places. The variety of fresh, local food they offer improves the health and well-being of citizens and the economy.”
Kitsap County maintains a website, providing a comprehensive list of local farmers markets and calendar of special farm and garden-related events. There are also food system resources, links to local farms and other community-supported agriculture. For more information, visit
