Joint Land Use Study Community Workshops Planned
Local jurisdictions and U.S. Navy seek community feedback on draft strategies to improve planning and compatibility of land uses
(Port Orchard, WA) A completed draft of the Naval Base Kitsap and Naval Magazine Indian Island Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) Report has been developed and will be available for public review starting July 28, 2015, on the JLUS project website at www.kiijlus.com. The report includes updated recommendations to address the various compatibility issues that were identified based on public input during the previous series of community workshops conducted last September and this February.
The third set of workshops in a series of community workshops have also been scheduled for Aug. 4 in Chimacum and Aug. 11 in Bremerton to allow the public an opportunity to review and comment on the updated draft of the JLUS Report. These workshops will also provide an opportunity for public to discuss issues and ask questions with members of the JLUS development team.
This JLUS is a community-driven, cooperative planning process among Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Magazine Indian Island, and the surrounding Counties, Cities, Tribal Governments, and the State. The primary goal is to promote compatibility between community development and the Navy’s testing and operational missions, while seeking ways to minimize any potential impacts of the Navy’s operations on adjacent communities and ecosystems.
The community workshops have been scheduled for:
• Jefferson County:
Tuesday, August 4, 6:00-7:30pm
Tri-Area Community Center
10 W Valley Road, Chimacum
• Kitsap County and City of Bremerton:
Tuesday, August 11, 4:30-6:00pm
Bremerton City Council Chambers
Norm Dicks Government Center
345 6th Street, Bremerton
Both workshops will begin with an open house, followed by a presentation on the updated recommendations to address the compatibility issues.
For those unable to attend the community workshop, project information and the presentation will be available on the project website at
www.kiijlus.com. Public can also make comments on the draft plan and sign up on the project website to receive updates on the project by email. The deadline for public comments on the draft will be August 24.
