Senior Citizen and Disabled Person's Exemption income limitation increase in 2016

(Port Orchard, WA)  The Washington State Legislature has passed, and the Governor has signed, legislation that will amend the senior citizen and disabled person property tax exemption and deferral programs. These programs provide relief from special levies, and freeze the taxable value of the property at its current level.

Beginning in 2016, income eligibility limits for these tax exemption programs increases from $35,000 to $40,000. The income limit for the senior/disabled deferral program, which enables qualifying taxpayers to delay payment of taxes, increases to $45,000.

To qualify for the senior exemption program one must be at least 61 years of age or fully disabled from employment. Applicants must own/occupy their home, and their gross annual household income must be $40,000 or less.

Anyone with questions about either program, or who would like an application when they become available in 2016, should contact the Kitsap County Assessor’s Office at 360.337.7160 for assistance..
