Learn about native plants this summer
Washington State University Extension offers affordable classes

(Kitsap County, WA) Join local gardeners and other community members who are interested in learning more about the beauty and value of native plants. There will be in-class and outdoor experiences presented in this 8 week series.

Where:   A variety of venues throughout Kitsap County
   
When:   Fridays- August 3 through September 28
(except August 24) from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm
   
Who:   Adults
   
Cost:   $40 for materials, scholarships available, reduced rate for couples who share materials

Attendees will learn about the following:

  • geology of our region

  • noxious weeds

  • taxonomy

  • salt water native plant habitats and riparian zones

  • native plants in rain gardens

  • incorporating native plants into a traditional landscape

  • how to use natives in restoration and enhancement

  • how to propagate and salvage native plants

  • septic system landscaping

  • silvics (the study of how trees grow

  • ethnobotany (how plants were used by people for food)

Instructors include: Katie Howard, a professor from Olympic College and Western Washington Huxley College of the Environment, Dana Coggon, Kitsap County's Noxious Weed Coordinator, Wendy McClure from the Native Plant Society, Jeff Adams from Washington Sea Grant, Master Gardener John Mikesell, Julia Gladstone from the Suquamish Tribal Center, Arno Bergstrom, WSU Kitsap Extension Director and Forester, Jodie Holdcroft from the Kitsap Public Health District, and Peg Tillery from the WSU Kitsap Extension.

Graduates of the course will receive a certificate from Washington State University Extension This series is primarily for volunteer training, but spots are open for those who just want to take the classes to learn more about native plants. Please indicate your preference on the registration.

Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of noncompliance may be reported through your local Extension office.
