Drug Court
Juvenile Drug Court is a one-year treatment-based program
for youth who are charged with certain crimes and who are in need of
education and treatment for substance abuse. The intent of the program is
to offer juvenile offenders an alternative to full criminal prosecution.
Drug Court includes close supervision, monitored abstinence (urinalysis),
regular court appearances, family involvement, education, and treatment
based on the needs of the individual. A combination of rewards and
sanctions are used to motivate the participants in the program and
recognition is given at the completion of the each stage of the program. A
graduation is held at the end of the program.
Juveniles charged with an offense may enter Drug Court
prior to conviction through a petition presented in juvenile court. This
is called deferred prosecution. Upon successful completion of the program,
the offense is dismissed with prejudice, which means it is removed from
the record. The advantage is no criminal history for the youth regarding
this charge.
Juveniles eligible for Drug Court must be referred for
having committed a crime. Juveniles must have a history of drug/alcohol
use, not be charged with a sex offense or violent offense, and not have
any convictions or pending charges of sales of drugs in amounts exceeding
$100.00.
