Sign Permits

What is the size restriction on a sign?
No one sign can exceed 90 square feet per face. Total signage for the use must not exceed 200 square feet.

What signs are exempt?
Signs which are exempt from the permit process are traffic signs, street signs, political campaign signs, legal notices, "for sale" or "for rent" signs located on the premises for sale or rent, and signs advertising officially sanctioned community festivals.

Are permits required for commercial signs?
Yes, a permit must be obtained prior to constructing or placing any commercial sign. An Occupancy Permit must be filed with the Department of Community Development before issuance of any sign permits.

How do I apply for a sign permit?
An application for sign permit, signed by the owner, contract vendee, lessee or tenant of the property or building, must be accompanied with:

A site plan, drawn at scale showing the property or building for which the sign is proposed with existing and proposed signs
Two (2) sets of plans (showing proposed sign) showing structural details, material specifications, means of attachment and illumination (if applicable)
Photographs showing the subject property or building marked to indicate the location of the proposed sign
Off-premise subdivision signs require a letter of consent from the property owner. The processing time is approximately one (1) week from the time the completed application is received

What is the cost of a sign permit?
An application fee will be charged for each sign.  Please view the Current Fee Schedule for the fee amount.

Before you place or construct any sign, please check with the Department of Community Development. For further information regarding sign ordinances, see the Zoning Ordinance (Title 17.445) of the Kitsap County Code.
